Former British number one Katie O’Brien, who reached number 84 in the world rankings, has retired from professional tennis – at the age of just 25.

O’Brien, who has been one of the biggest names in female tennis in the UK in recent years has said that she made the decision because t is “time to explore other avenues of life”. She won four ITF singles titles – at Hull in 2005, Nottingham in 2006, and Sutton and Jersey in 2009, pushing her into the world’s top 100, peaking at 84^th in 2010.

Her last professional appearance came at the World Team Tennis event in the United States last month, and added that she is “very proud of what I’ve accomplished over the years, and I’m grateful to the LTA and my family for all their support and providing me with the opportunities I’ve had.”

O’Brien competed at Wimbledon, the Australian Open and the French Open in her career, never getting beyond round two, and only the first round at Roland Garros, and is another example of a potential British top class tennis player moving away from the sport at a young age, something British tennis has struggled with for many years now.
